What home insurance covers
- Dwelling
- The structure of your home, including attached features like a garage.
- Other structures
- Detached structures on your property, such as fences, block walls and sheds.
- Personal property
- Your furniture, clothing, electronics and other belongings.
- Loss of use
- Extra living costs, like a hotel, if a covered loss makes your home unlivable.
- Personal liability
- Legal and medical costs if you're responsible for someone else's injury or property damage.
Good to know in Arizona
- Monsoon season. Wind and hail damage are commonly covered by standard home policies, but flooding usually is not. Flood coverage is a separate policy.
- Pools and spas. They add liability risk. Make sure your liability limit is high enough, and consider an umbrella policy.
- Rebuilding costs. Construction prices change. Check that your dwelling coverage would rebuild your home at today's prices.
- Valuables. Jewelry, art and collectibles often have low limits unless you list them separately.
What home insurance usually doesn't cover
Standard policies generally exclude flood and earthquake, and they don't pay for routine wear and tear or maintenance. Learn more in our guide, What your homeowners policy covers, and what it doesn't.
