Why renters insurance is worth it

Your landlord's insurance covers the building, not your things. Here's what renters insurance does for you.

It's a common surprise: the landlord's policy protects the building, but not your belongings and not your liability. If there's a fire, a break-in or a burst pipe, you'd be replacing your things on your own.

What renters insurance typically covers

  • Your belongings from events like fire, theft and certain types of water damage.
  • Liability if a guest is injured in your home or you accidentally damage someone else's property.
  • Additional living expenses such as a hotel if you can't stay in your place after a covered loss.

How much is your stuff worth?

Most people underestimate it. Walk through your home room by room and add up the clothing, electronics, furniture, kitchen items and everything else. Taking photos or a quick video and saving them somewhere safe makes any future claim much smoother.

Good to know

  • Many landlords now require renters insurance as part of the lease.
  • Coverage is often affordable, and bundling with your auto policy can lower the cost further.
  • Roommates generally need their own policy unless the policy names them.
